With 2 days in Rome, you won't see everything—but you can experience many of the city's greatest sights without spending your entire trip rushing around.
Here's how we'd spend two days in the Eternal City.

Day 1: Vatican City & Historic Rome
Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel
Start early at the Vatican Museums, one of the most impressive museum collections in the world.
The museums are enormous, so give yourself a few hours before eventually reaching the Sistine Chapel.
Booking your tickets ahead of time is highly recommended.
St. Peter's Basilica
After the museums, head to St. Peter's Basilica.
Entrance to the basilica itself is free, while climbing the dome requires a separate ticket.
If you have the energy, the views from the top are fantastic.
Piazza Navona & the Pantheon
Cross back over the Tiber and spend the afternoon wandering through Rome's historic center.
Stop at Piazza Navona before continuing toward the Pantheon, with plenty of cafés, restaurants, and tiny streets to explore along the way.
Trevi Fountain
Finish your first day at the Trevi Fountain.
Yes, it's crowded and touristy—but it's also one of those famous attractions that genuinely lives up to the hype.
Day 2: Ancient Rome
The Colosseum
Start Day 2 at Rome's most famous landmark: the Colosseum.
We recommend booking ahead, especially if you want a tour that includes special access to the arena floor.
Roman Forum
From the Colosseum, continue directly into the Roman Forum.
This was once the political and social heart of Ancient Rome, and many of its temples, columns, and ruins still stand today.
A tour or audio guide makes a huge difference here.
Palatine Hill
Continue up Palatine Hill, overlooking the Forum and surrounding ruins.
The Forum and Palatine Hill pair perfectly with the Colosseum and can easily take up most of your morning and early afternoon.
Wander Back Through Central Rome
After spending several hours exploring Ancient Rome, keep the rest of the afternoon relaxed.
Grab lunch, wander through the historic streets, or revisit anything you didn't have time for on Day 1.
Spanish Steps
Finish your two days in Rome around the Spanish Steps.
It's an easy area to explore on foot, with plenty of restaurants, cafés, and shopping nearby for your final evening.
Is 2 Days in Rome Enough?
Two days in Rome is enough to see the highlights, but you'll need to prioritize.
Giving one day primarily to Vatican City and another to the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill keeps the itinerary simple while still covering Rome's two biggest sightseeing areas.
You won't see everything—and that's probably a good reason to come back.
