Vietnam, however, has been the cheapest, most affordable, and most stress-free place we’ve ever lived. Within just a few days of arriving in Da Nang, I realized how little we were spending compared to how much we were actually doing each day.
The longer we stay, the better we feel financially. We’ve been able to save more money, pay off debt, and enjoy a lifestyle that would have been completely unaffordable back home.
2. Beautiful Beaches Just Minutes From Your Apartment
It takes us just 7 minutes to walk to the beach. If you live on the “beach side” of Da Nang, east of the river, you’re never more than a 20-minute walk from the ocean.
The beaches here are one of the city’s biggest advantages for digital nomads. You get access to the clear green waters of the South China Sea, long stretches of crescent-shaped shoreline, and a surprisingly relaxed atmosphere that never feels overcrowded.
Along the beach, you’ll find tiki bars, watersports rentals, beachfront cafes, and plenty of spots to sit and unwind after work. Whether you want to improve your surfing skills or just enjoy a little daily “toes-in-the-sand” time, Da Nang makes beach living feel effortless.

One of the best parts about working online in Da Nang is how easy it is to find a comfortable place to set up your laptop. Even the smallest “hole-in-the-wall” coffee shops usually have internet fast enough for video calls, uploads, and everyday remote work.

Da Nang still has the energy of a real city, but it feels far more laid-back, peaceful, and manageable than places like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.
Yes, the traffic can seem chaotic at first, especially if you’re new to Vietnam, but you adjust surprisingly quickly. After a few days, even crossing the street starts to feel completely normal, and you realize that nobody is ever really in a rush.
The city naturally moves at a slower pace. Early mornings and late afternoons are when locals are most active, while the middle of the day becomes noticeably quieter. Many local restaurants and businesses outside the tourist areas even close for an afternoon break, giving the city a more relaxed rhythm and stress-free atmosphere.
At night, Da Nang still has plenty of life, especially around the beach bars and tourist streets, but it never feels overwhelmingly chaotic. Unlike places such as Khao San Road in Bangkok or Bui Vien Walking Street in Saigon, the nightlife here is more chill, comfortable, and easier to enjoy long term.

The food scene in Da Nang is one of the biggest reasons we love living here. Vietnam has easily been the cheapest country we’ve ever traveled to for food, especially considering the quality and variety available.
For around $1 USD, you can grab a fresh Banh Mi or sit down for a steaming bowl of Bun Cha on one of Vietnam’s classic plastic sidewalk stools. Local food is not only incredibly affordable, but also some of the best street food in the world.
What surprised us most was how affordable the international food scene is too. Everything from pizza and burgers to sushi and salads can usually be found for $5 USD or less.
Da Nang also has an amazing selection of Korean, Indian, Thai, Mexican, Turkish, and Greek restaurants, with many dishes starting around $2–6 USD. Some of the Indian and Korean food here is genuinely the best we’ve ever had.
Even when shopping for groceries, we find it difficult to spend more than $10 USD per day for two people, and we definitely don’t budget very strictly.
6. Easy Weekend Trips to Hoi An and Hue
One of the best things about living in Da Nang is how many incredible destinations are just a short trip away.
Hoi An, Vietnam’s famous ancient town, is only about a 40-minute scooter ride south of Da Nang. The city’s charming Old Town is filled with beautiful walking streets lined with local restaurants, tailor shops, cafes, and traditional architecture.
In the evenings, Hoi An completely transforms. The city glows with its famous colorful hanging lanterns, while the riverside fills with food vendors, small boats, and bustling night markets. The cooler temperatures and illuminated streets make the late afternoon and evening the perfect time to explore.
The atmosphere feels incredibly unique — a mix of historic charm, vibrant street food culture, and relaxed riverside energy that makes it easy to spend an entire weekend wandering around.
For digital nomads living in Da Nang, having a destination like Hoi An so close by makes weekend getaways feel completely effortless.
Hue is home to the Imperial City, the historic citadel that once served as Vietnam’s royal capital. The city is packed with ancient architecture, historic temples, and a much slower, more traditional atmosphere than Da Nang.
One of the most popular ways to get there is by taking a scooter through the famous Hai Van Pass, one of the most scenic coastal roads in all of Southeast Asia. The ride takes around 4 hours with photo stops, and the mountain views overlooking the ocean are absolutely unforgettable.
If riding a motorbike through the mountains isn’t your thing, you can also reach Hue by taxi in about 2 hours using the quicker inland route.
There’s also a train ride along the coast that takes roughly 3.5 hours, and it’s easily the most relaxing and scenic way to make the trip. Watching the coastline, jungle-covered mountains, and fishing villages pass by the window makes the journey feel like part of the experience itself.
For anyone living in Da Nang, Hue is an easy getaway filled with Vietnamese history, culture, and some of the most beautiful scenery in the country.

New construction and development are happening everywhere, making the city feel modern and constantly improving without losing its charm.
People here are generally very open to making new connections, whether you’re a freelancer, entrepreneur, remote worker, or long-term traveler. There are always community events happening around town, from film clubs and art classes to pickleball matches, language exchanges, and networking meetups.

We came to Da Nang with high expectations, but we still tried to stay realistic. Very rarely does a place actually live up to the image you build in your head before arriving.
Da Nang somehow exceeded all of it.
The combination of beachside living, a low-stress cost of living, amazing food, and a relaxed daily lifestyle has genuinely made our quality of life better than it has ever been.
Being able to walk to the beach, eat incredible food every day, work comfortably online, and still spend less money than we did back home has made Da Nang incredibly hard to leave.
For us, it’s the perfect balance of comfort, affordability, community, and freedom — which is why we keep extending our stay.
